HW Martin Recycling Facility
A Case Study in Dust and Odour Suppression
Challenge:
HW Martin Waste operates some of the largest Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) in England, providing vital sorting and transfer capacity for household waste, trade waste, and recyclable materials. Their Derbyshire facility stands out with its advanced processes for sorting plastics and glass, but as with all high-volume recycling centres, managing airborne dust and odours was a significant challenge.
Dust generated from processing paper, metal, and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) posed potential health hazards and risks to operational efficiency. The need for a system capable of handling large, complex facilities was essential to ensure compliance with health and safety standards and improve air quality for employees.

The Mist-air Solution:
mist-air has partnered with HW Martin for over a decade, delivering customised dust and odour suppression systems across multiple facilities. At the Derbyshire MRF, mist-air installed a combination of roof-mounted, fan-assisted misting manifolds, as well as localised static systems.
Key elements of the installation included:
- Roof-Mounted Fan-Assisted Manifolds: These systems provided wide coverage, suppressing dust across the reception hall, hopper loading areas, and throughout the building.
- Localised Static Manifolds: Specially installed at critical points such as vibrating tables, screens, transfer points, and fines bays, ensuring comprehensive dust control.
- Odour Absorption: The misting system was designed to neutralise odours throughout the facility, maintaining a more pleasant and safer working environment.
Results
After implementing the mist-air suppression system, HW Martin achieved:
- Enhanced Air Quality: Significant dust reduction across all key areas of the facility, contributing to a safer and more comfortable workspace.
- Odour Control: The system effectively absorbed odours, particularly in areas where Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is handled.
- Compliance: Improved regulatory compliance with dust control standards and health and safety guidelines.
- Increased Operational Efficiency: Reduced downtime and maintenance due to dust accumulation, extending the lifespan of machinery and equipment.
