XPO Logistics, a global leader in supply chain management, operates a large depot in Doncaster that handles, washes, and recycles packaging primarily sourced from supermarkets. This high-volume operation involves handling and processing various packaging materials, which generates significant dust, particularly during baling. Respiratory dust from the baling of materials by two Presona and HSM balers posed both a health risk to workers and potential damage to sensitive machinery.

The Mist-air Solution:
mist-air installed a comprehensive dust suppression system at the Doncaster depot in 2013, designed to target dust at critical stages of the recycling process. The system uses mist-air’s unique micro-fine fog, which controls dust without wetting, ensuring the environment remains dry and safe for both personnel and equipment.
Key features of the system included:
- Roof-Mounted Fan-Assisted Manifolds: Provided generalised dust suppression throughout the facility, creating a cleaner and safer working environment.
- Localised Manifolds at the Baler: Strategically placed near the two balers to suppress dust directly at the source during both the feeding of waste into the baler and the compacting process.
- Micro-Fine Fog: The proprietary fogging technology enables efficient dust suppression without wetting, which is critical in moisture-sensitive environments like XPO’s packaging depot.

Since the installation of the mist-air system, XPO Logistics has seen:
